The 2014 Ben-Gurion Gala Luncheon, honouring Marjorie and Morley Blankstein, pillars of the Winnipeg community and true supporters of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev was a resounding success and a great celebration!
The Ballroom at the Fairmont Winnipeg was filled with more than 350 people from all walks of life: community leaders representing all facets of Winnipeg society, Members of Parliament, university students, businessmen, academics from local universities, friends and family of the honourees - over $450,000 has been raised so far in support of The Malware Analysis Laboratories at Ben-Gurion University.
The Keynote Speaker, Prof. Yuval Elovici, Director of the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories at BGU and one of the world’s foremost authorities on Cyber Security, delivered an enlightening presentation about cyber security and its relevance to today’s world, explaining how his research applies to challenges faced by business, government, and the individual. Professor Elovici highlighted the importance of BGU and the city of Beer-sheva as outstanding centres of research and development in the struggle against cyber crime.
Special Guest Speaker, The Honourable Greg Selinger, Premier of Manitoba, emphasized the importance of cyber security to Manitoba and to the world. Canada’s Ambassador to the United States and former Premier of Manitoba, Gary Doer, sent special video recorded greetings to the honourees, as did Prof. Rivka Carmi, President of BGU.
The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, brought greetings from the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, and from the Federal Government. Present at the luncheon were members of Parliament, members of the provincial legislature, President of the University of Winnipeg, Lloyd Axworthy and the Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, Harvey Secter, as well as many prominent members of the Jewish community and from the city of Winnipeg at large, all of whom came to pay tribute to the Blanksteins and to support Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
