President of BGU, Prof. Rivka Carmi in Winnipeg
Saturday, May 31st, 2014
On Saturday, May 31st Professor Rivka Carmi, President of BGU arrived in Winnipeg, the third stop on her trans-Canadian journey. The highlight of Prof. Carmi’s productive 2 day visit was a Sunday brunch at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue hosted by CABGU. The event afforded Prof. Carmi the opportunity to thank those who participated in the May 4th Gala honouring Marjorie and Morley Blankstein. A group of 50 people, including major donors and regional board members attended the brunch.
Prof. Carmi doubled as guest of honour and keynote speaker. She re-counted her road to becoming the first female President of Israel’s fastest growing university, described some of BGU’s most exciting research projects and eloquently thanked Marjorie and Morley Blankstein and the rest of the Winnipeg community that came together to raise over $450,000 for BGU. The brunch was generously sponsored by Larry and Tova Vickar. On Monday, June 2nd, Prof Carmi met with Gail Asper, President of the Asper Foundation before departing for Montreal. With no exaggeration we can say that the meeting was historic; the encounter between two strong and unique leaders, both women are working very hard to change the world. We hope that a promising and fruitful collaboration lies ahead for the Asper Foundation and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
CABGU Manitoba Region would like to give a special thank you to Bernie Bellan, owner and editor of the Jewish Post and News, for recording Rivka Carmi’s full speech, which can be seen on the Jewish Post and News’s website in the link below.
