Winnipeg - Wednesday, August 13th, 2014
On Wednesday, August 13th 2014 the Manitoba chapter of Canadian Associates of Ben-Gurion University convened for a BBQ welcoming Professor Amos Drory, BGU Vice President for External Affairs and Professor Steve Rosen, Deputy Rector and incoming Vice President.
Board members, community leaders and BGU stakeholders gathered in full force to celebrate BGU's success but also to address the toll that the current conflict in Gaza is taking on the University. CABGU Chief Executive Officer Mark Mendelson recently visited Israel and he shared the troubling reality of the situation with BBQ attendees. Because of its close proximity to Gaza, the university was forced to suspend classes and examinations and hundreds of students have been called up for military service. Regional President Sheldon Zamick outlined the many ways that Winnipeggers can help BGU's students and faculty to weather these trying times, specifically by providing scholarships for students who have been forced to put their studies on hold. Professor Rosen expressed his gratitude and awe for the solidarity and support that Canadians have shown to Israel and Ben-Gurion University. Over 50 people attended the barbeque which was graciously hosted at the beautiful home of Yolanda Papini-Pollock and family.
