For the seventh consecutive year, Canadian Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has sponsored a team of MBA students to compete at the John Molson MBA International Case Competition at Concordia University. For the second year, the team was made up of students from the Mandel Social Leadership MBA Program (SLMBA) at Ben-Gurion University’s Guilford Glazer Faculty of Business and Management. The Mandel MBA Program provides its students with top management skills as well as knowledge about not-for-profit organizations, so that they can become effective agents of social change.

is reflected in the participants’ biographies - their interests and occupations include working in a variety of programs for at-risk youth, creating theater for individuals with hearing and/or vision impairments, promoting tolerance and acceptance in Israel’s multi-cultural milieu, using football as an agent for peace, and developing educational programs in a Jewish-Arab school in Jaffa. At the same time as they engage in these admirable pursuits, they are also working towards completing their MBA degree.
Under the guidance of their Coach, Prof. Pierre Kletz, Director of the SLMBA, and their Assistant Coach, Shachar Liran-Hanan, a graduate of the SLMBA who participated in 2016, the team members really put their hearts into the 2017 Competition! They competed in five cases, against teams from the Netherlands, South Africa, Arizona and Brock and McMaster Universities from Canada. The cases represented a variety of business challenges - from a manufacturer of watches trying to increase its market share, a dairy company in India seeking to add to its product line, a multi-national retailer concerned with expansion, a taxi company trying to expand in the South African market, and WeWork, a company founded by an Israeli which provides shared services to entrepreneurs, looking for a new source of growth. Our team won two of the cases with éclat
The John Molson MBA Competition has proven to be a wonderful experience for our BGU teams over these seven years. Facing real-life business problems, observing their peers and stretching their own limits are what the event is all about, and the 2017 team, like the six BGU teams who came before them, have derived profound benefits from being part of the Competition.
In their own words:
Anat - ‘It was an exceptional experience - I learned a lot and was also able to proudly represent Israel and BGU.’
Keren - ‘I didn’t know I had family in Montreal - we received the most warm and supportive hospitality that could be.’
Oded - ‘What an amazing and insightful experience, seeing familiar, smiling faces in the audience was tremendously helpful.’
Iddo - ‘I experienced in one week what I don’t think I will experience in a year - representing BGU and Israel gave me a new sense of purpose.’
Roey - ‘Thank you for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, which was educating, inspiring and also enabled us to present the Israeli spirit of thinking out of the box. I truly believe that our presence in the competition did a great service for our country and opened the eyes and the hearts of judges and participants, even those who were "hard to get".’
Shachar - ‘Coming back to Montreal, this time as Assistant Coach, just shows how incredible our University is, offering us these kinds of opportunities. The John Molson MBA International Case Competition is one of the highlights of my five years at BGU, both for my personal and professional development.’
This remarkable experience would not have been possible without the generous support of all of those who contributed! Many thanks to all our supporters, as well as Mark Mendelson, CEO of CABGU, and our friends at the Israeli Consulate in Montreal, Consul General Ziv Nevo Kulman, Deputy Consul General Rotem Segev, and Virginie Chocron, Director of Academic Affairs and Digital Diplomacy.
We are very grateful for the generosity of our corporate sponsors, whose support has contributed to these students' professional enrichment.
