ABOUT THE LILLIAN AND LARRY GOODMAN OPEN APARTMENTS PROGRAM

A vital thread in the fabric of the Be’er-Sheva community, the Lillian and Larry Goodman Open Apartments Program at Ben-Gurion University is a multi-faceted initiative that creates a sense of belonging in the lives of the most vulnerable.

Eighty Goodman fellows spend the academic year living in apartments in two older neighborhoods of Be’er-Sheva – the Daled neighborhood (in the Hatalmud, Sanhedrin and Bar Giora areas) and the Gimmel neighborhood (in the Rotenberg and Kalisher areas). It is in these poorest of neighborhoods that each student “adopts” a family and forges strong connections in their respective communities.

In exchange for rent, each Goodman Fellow volunteers for at least eight hours per week. Serving as role models, they run 41 clubs and classes, from homework help and art to theatre, sports, cooking and more. Some 600 neighbourhood children, teenagers and adults participate in these activities in neighbourhood community centres, in bomb shelters as well as in the students’ own apartments.

Our student volunteers also organize community-wide events such as Yom Hazikaron commemorations and our community theatre project led by Dr. Zmira Ron-David gives groups of adults and teenagers a platform to share their personal stories and stage an event on campus.

The Goodman Fellows have opened their doors and hearts to more than 50,000 residents to date.
