Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Be’er Sheva, Israel, has announced a $100 million gift from Canadian-Israeli Giving Pledger Sylvan Adams in support of education programs and to bolster campus life.

The funds will support projects focused on advancements in technology, climate change, sustainability and the environment, and global health and bolster rebuilding and reconstruction efforts in southern Israel, where the university is the region’s largest employer. According to BGU, the university lost 82 members of its community during the October 7 attack on Israel.

“The imperative to inject life into the Negev, David Ben-Gurion’s vision…of making the desert bloom, is more important now than ever,” said Adams. “We must make sure that the desert remains the launching point of Israel’s future, and I am proud to make this gift to BGU, an important pillar of our country.”

“Our university has been a catalyst for economic and social development for over 50 years in this area of Israel,” said Mitchell Oelbaum, president of Ben-Gurion University Canada, the Canadian fundraising arm of BGU. “This gift comes at the perfect time for renewal.”
