Inside the “Startup Nation Mindset Challenge”: Reflections from a BGU Delegate

By: Matthew Cutler

Federation CJA’s ProMontreal Entrepreneurs Hub (PME) recently returned home from a 10-day intensive leadership opportunity designed to infuse Montreal’s entrepreneurial ecosystem with the bold, problem-solving spirit of Israel’s startup culture.

The “Startup Nation Mindset Challenge,” held at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Be’er Sheva, brought together 13 entrepreneurs representing nine businesses, six of which are funded by PME. This unique experience was made possible through a four-way partnership between Ben-Gurion University Canada (BGU Canada), Ben-Gurion University, Federation CJA, and Partnership2Gether.

Reflecting on this incredible opportunity, here are my top five take-aways:

1. Be’er-Sheva - what a city!

Having never been to the unofficial capital of the Negev  before, I was really impressed with the thriving nature of the community. I explored the city extensively in the evening, the days were spent on campus and saw all these pockets of impressive growth. Looking out from the roof of the engineering building at BGU, it’s easy to see where and how the city is being built up, and fast!  I can’t wait to get back and see all the new additions.

2. BGU – an incredible campus!

It was my first visit to the Marcus Family Campus, and we arrived just in time to take in the excitement of the start of the fall semester. The energy was electric, and the campus was full of life. Seeing the multi-cultural representation on campus also surprised me, and it was great to experience it first-hand.  While there, I was trying to figure out a way to enroll!

3. The Yazamut 360 Entrepreneurship Center

The entrepreneurial spirit on campus is thriving and growing – in large part thanks to the Yazamut 360 Entrepreneurship Center.  While I had spoken to several students and staff at the center before my arrival, what I hadn’t realized was that all the students who are a part of this incredible hub come there voluntarily. The only credit program offered through the centre is the Leaders program. It was impressive to see how students are using every tool at their disposal and taking advantage of every opportunity afforded to them, to propel themselves forward.

4. The Israeli Problem-Solving Mindset was on full display

It’s not enough to read about it, but to be immersed in it through our sessions, in meetings with local entrepreneurs and VCs, and then in our discussions with the students, I really came away believing in this system and wanting to bring more of it to the Montreal community.

5. Mental Toughness and Resilience

Learning and experiencing just how much brain power and determination it takes for Israelis to put their worries aside and focus on growth and opportunity was inspiring.  It is this resilience that contributes and really prepares them for life as entrepreneurs. It is no wonder Israel is known as Startup Nation!

It was an awesome experience, and I can’t wait to get back there!
