Honouring DBG on his Birthday: Words We Need to Hear Today

Dear Friends,

Today is the birthday of David Ben-Gurion (DBG) and it is also the official day to commemorate October 7th in Israel.

To honour this day, I asked Chat GPT a simple question: based on the current situation in Israel, what would DBG say in a speech?

Speech DBG Might Give Today (excerpted from Chat GPT):

Brothers and Sisters of Israel,

When we founded this state, we knew it would not be easy. We knew that the return of the Jewish people to their homeland would not be greeted with open arms by all. We knew that the cost of sovereignty was vigilance, sacrifice, and unity.

But we also believed—deep in our souls—that the Jewish people, having endured exile and destruction, could build a society not only strong in arms, but in spirit. That remains our greatest task.

What happened on October 7 was a tragedy of unfathomable proportions. The slaughter of innocents, soldiers fell in battle, the taking of hostages, the terror that pierced our communities—these are wounds that will not heal easily. I grieve with every family, as I grieved for those lost in our early wars of independence. We demand, with one voice, that Hamas release every last hostage now and unconditionally. The suffering of their loved ones compels us to act with courage, unity, and purpose.

I look upon Israel today and see a nation of great achievements—scientific, technological, spiritual—but also one divided by faction and hatred. In our early years, I quarreled with rivals, but when the moment came, we stood shoulder to shoulder. The state of the Jewish people must be governed by the shared destiny of Am Yisrael. Some will say peace is impossible. I say: peace is improbable, but never impossible.

My brothers and sisters, Israel has faced dark nights before. We have seen war, terror, isolation, and doubt. Yet always we rose again, because the spirit of the people is stronger than fear.

I believed then, and I believe now, that the State of Israel is not yet finished being created. Every generation must take part in its building—brick by brick, deed by deed, dream by dream.
