Despite the challenge of mass flight cancellations following the Houthi missile attack on Ben-Gurion Airport nearly three weeks ago, 33 Canadians made the journey to participate in BGU’s 55th Board of Governors (BOG) meetings last week—forming the largest delegation from outside Israel.
Two powerful themes shaped the entire experience: a bold, purpose-driven vision for Israel’s future, and the deep, enduring pain of October 7th.

BGU President Professor Daniel Chamovitz shared his vision for the university, highlighting priorities such as doubling BGU’s footprint, embracing AI while safeguarding our humanity, a renewed commitment to the Negev, and fostering entrepreneurship as a cultural force. Events like BGU Shark Tank, where student entrepreneurs pitched inspiring ideas to experts, and New Frontiers in Science, spotlighting groundbreaking interdisciplinary research, demonstrated BGU’s unwavering dedication to innovation and to shaping a better future for Israel—and the world.

Yet, the heartache of October 7th was never far. From a deeply moving interview with advocates fighting for the safe return of the 58 hostages still held by Hamas, to an emotional musical tribute by Daniel Wais—a gifted artist from Kibbutz Be’eri whose parents were murdered in the attack—the grief was palpable, yet so was the resilience.
The BOG experience also celebrated the breathtaking beauty of the Negev and the exceptional achievements of this year’s Honorary Doctorate recipients. Among them was former Torontonian Dr. Judith Shamian, recognized for her inspiring global leadership in nursing and healthcare. We also honoured 33-year-old Nuseir Yassin, known as "Nas Daily," the Arab-Israeli vlogger whose powerful storytelling continues to move millions.

A moment of special pride was the unveiling of the new ambulance simulator—funded through The Future is Now Gala in Toronto three years ago. This state-of-the-art training tool now allows BGU students and paramedics to sharpen their skills in lifelike emergency scenarios, preparing them to save lives when it matters most.
Enjoy this special edition of our eConnect, which brings you highlights from the BOG. I hope you can join us next year.
