Chag Pesach Sameach! From Slavery to Freedom, from Adversity to Hope

A MESSAGE FROM BGU CANADA CEO ANDREA FREEDMAN

Dear Friends,

As we gather this Passover to retell the ancient story of the Exodus — a journey from slavery to freedom — we are reminded that this narrative is not confined to history alone. It is a timeless tale of resilience, struggle, and ultimately, redemption. For a second Pesach, we reflect not only on our ancestors' liberation, but also on the pain and continued torture of the 59 Israeli hostages — a sobering reminder that our journey toward freedom is incomplete.

Yet even amidst hardship, hope shines through, and it’s important to celebrate success.

This Passover, a beacon of that hope comes from the Negev Desert, where the Mishmash Robotics Team from the Jusidman Youth Science Center at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) is emerging as a symbol of pride and promise. This remarkable team of young innovators, hailing from Israel’s periphery — a region still reeling from the devastation of October 7th — has earned the honor of representing Israel on the global stage at the Robotics International Competition in Houston, Texas.

With the support of generous philanthropists their story is one of modern-day redemption — of tragedy transformed through ingenuity, teamwork, and determination. From the sands of the Negev to the world stage, these students carry with them the spirit of BGU and of Israel: bold, creative, and unbreakable. If you would like to support the team’s travel to the competition, it is appreciated.

As we dip our parsley in salt water and taste the bitterness of oppression, let us also savor the sweetness of hope — the knowledge that even in our most difficult times, there are those among us who rise.

Chag Pesach Sameach — a joyous and meaningful Passover to all, and Yasher Koach to the Mishmash Robotics Team.

Warmly,

Andrea

P.S. The Nova Exhibition is coming to Toronto from April 23 to June 8: www.novaexhibition.com. The important film October 8 is also currently in theaters across many Canadian cities: October 8th Screening times.

It is critical that we help our non-Jewish friends, family, and colleagues understand what it means to be Jewish in 2025. Bring them with you to bear witness.

Pesach Sameach and Shabbat Shalom,

Andrea
