Ben-Gurion University of the Negev has announced that this year’s Ben-Gurion Award will be presented to Dr. Esther Luzzatto, public activist, social impact leader, and businesswoman.
The award will be presented to Dr. Luzzatto, along with five other leading figures who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision for the Negev, the State of Israel, and the world. The honorees will be recognized at a festive ceremony on November 26, 2025, the anniversary of the passing of David Ben-Gurion.
Dr. Luzzatto, CEO of the Luzzatto Group, holds a PhD in chemistry and is a patent attorney and social entrepreneur. For four decades, she has dedicated a significant portion of her time to public and social activity, entirely on a voluntary basis.
Her work spans many fields, with a particular focus on developing the Negev and advancing women. She chairs Israel for the Negev, an organization that championed the relocation of IDF intelligence units to the Negev, despite opposition from senior military leadership.
Luzzatto also serves as chair of Yachdav, a nonprofit that provides social services to diverse populations and conducts community programs for at-risk children and youth, people recovering from addiction, individuals with disabilities, and women who have survived sexual violence.
Another area of focus of Dr. Luzzatto’s work is in promoting gender equality and advancing women into senior positions, especially in science and technology. Three years ago, she was appointed chair of the Council for the Advancement of Women in Science and Technology.
Dr. Luzzatto is active in numerous organizations, including the Ayalim Association, the Menachem Begin Heritage Center Foundation, the Friends Association of the Beersheba Theater, and the Friends of the Be’er Sheva Sinfonietta.
The prize committee stated: “Dr. Esther Luzzatto is a business and public leader whose contribution to Israeli society extends far beyond her professional achievements. She promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, and gender equality, making her a model of values-based leadership. Her extensive work over the years positions her as one of the leading contributors to the development of Israeli society and its economy.”
“I am excited and proud to receive this award from Ben-Gurion University, which is very dear to my heart and where my husband, my children, and I all studied,” said Dr. Luzzatto. “I view this honor as recognition not only of my personal and professional work, but also as acknowledgment of the involvement of many citizens in the Negev and the Galilee who work with dedication to advance national and regional projects and to promote growth, prosperity, and well-being. I view this important award as a national expression of gratitude for their vital work.”
