Dear friends,
It is incomprehensible that one year has passed since a modern-day pogrom took place in Israel and it is inconceivable that men, women and children are still held captive by Hamas and by a world indifferent to their suffering.
Every day, we see new examples of antisemitism on our streets and in, and by, institutions we used to trust. We are dismayed by the world’s confusion in tallying the tragic number of civilian casualties and erroneously concluding that this is the result of Israeli aggression, as opposed to Israel’s right and responsibility to defend herself. We understand that the only thing standing between the endless barrage of missiles causing mass Israeli casualties, are Israel’s stellar air defence systems.
We celebrate even the smallest signs of solidarity and understanding from our fellow citizens, precisely because they are so rare, with the silent majority frightened into voicelessness by the marauding mobs ever present on our streets.
Yesterday, the Ben-Gurion University community came together in a powerful and moving global commemoration of October 7th. We heard stories of horrific pain and loss and also of remarkable resilience. Please take a moment to watch this poignant memorial video to the BGU victims – those who were slain on October 7th and those who have since fallen in battle. May their memory be for a blessing.
Today is an unbearably painful day as we grieve, while surrounded by a cacophony of hate. Let’s double down on our efforts to support our brothers and sisters in Israel and build strong, vibrant Canadian Jewish communities. As David Ben-Gurion said “The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.”
