GREETINGS FROM BGU CANADA

May is shaping up to be a busy and productive month for BGU. Our monthly eConnect newsletter is packed with stories and information about Israel's only university in the Negev, including the signing of a Donor Pledge Agreement between Winnipeg's businessman, philanthropist and member of BGU's World Board of Governors, Larry Vickar, BGU and the Manitoba Métis Federation. Earlier this year, representatives from four Canadian cities attended BGU's Halutz Initiative for Global Leadership - a week-long program that showcases the best of the best that the university has to offer. Learn more about the program and the Canadian delegation in our Spotlight special.

Here at home, we have some exciting events taking place in Montreal and Vancouver while Toronto is gearing up to announce their fireside chat speaker for the second annual "The Future is Now Gala" later this week.

Manitoba Métis Federation, Vickar Automotive Group,
and BGU sign Donor Pledge Agreement

The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), Vickar Automotive Group (Vickar Group) and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) signed a Donor Pledge Agreement (DPA) yesterday at the Sde Boker Campus of BGU, establishing a cooperative relationship. The DPA serves as a framework for academic collaboration and cooperation in research and educational programs. The signing of this DPA is a significant step towards building stronger relationships between the Red River Métis in western Canada and the people of Israel.

Winnipeg businessman and philanthropist Larry Vickar has been a strong supporter of BGU, where he serves on the World Board of Governors. We thank him for his continued support and connection to BGU.


SPOTLIGHT:
The Halutz Initiative for Global Leadership

The Halutz Initiative for Global Leadership is an immersive program led by scholars and scientists from Ben-Gurion University (BGU). The program invites a select group of promising individuals from around the world to attend a week-long visit to BGU so they can learn about the incredible research and work that is being conducted at the university.

Name: Karen Alko
Hometown: Vancouver, B.C.
Profession: Manager, Community Relations

Karen is a Community Relations professional with a Degree in Liberal Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. She is a proud fourth-generation member of her family enterprise, ABC Recycling, and has actively been involved since 1999. Karen is currently the Manager of Community Relations and oversees all the social responsibility, community relations, Indigenous relations, donations, and employee charitable campaign activities.

In addition, Karen directs and supports the family enterprise development activities. She is a passionate advocate for the growth and well-being of family enterprise.

Name: Mick Kanfi
Hometown: Montreal, Quebec
Profession: Operating Partner, Inerjys

Mick brings 18 years of professional services experience to Inerjys. He is responsible for operations including investing and portfolio management. Mick founded Twist Image in 2000, grew it to one of the largest Digital Marketing agencies in Canada which was later acquired by WPP in 2014.

As an entrepreneur who successfully managed an exit, Mick has seen all sides of the entrepreneurship journey. Throughout his career, Mick has worked with Fortune 500 companies in developing business strategies, marketing plans and has helped them transform their companies so they could properly navigate in the digital age.

For the past 8 years, Mick has sat on charitable and early-stage investment Boards, and mentored entrepreneurs.

Name: Dr. Zack Dulberg
Hometown: Thornhill, Ontario
Profession: Family physician and current PhD candidate in Neuroscience at Princeton University

Zack grew up in Thornhill and completed his Bachelor of Science in Physics and Physiology at McGill University in Montreal. He also earned his M.D. from the University of Toronto and completed his medical residency in Ottawa.

Zack's research now focuses on using modern tools of artificial intelligence, such as deep reinforcement learning to build models of human cognition. More specifically, asking the question: are there benefits to constructing artificial agents with “multiple selves”, and could those benefits explain why humans experience psychological conflict?

Name: Maury Steindel
Hometown: Winnipeg, Manitoba
Profession: Civil Engineer specializing in Transportation Infrastructure with a focus on Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety. 

For the past 15 years, Maury has worked on multi-disciplinary engineering projects across Canada including residential/commercial developments, highway network and interchange designs, and regional public transit systems upgrades. 

Before starting his engineering career, Maury owned and operated a theatre production company that supported community theatre groups with set construction, lighting, audio and stage management. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors, cooking, working on home renovations, and restoring antique woodworking tools. 


UPCOMING EVENTS

BGU Canada leadership and friends are getting ready for Board of Governors Meetings that start Sunday, May 14. Among the many ceremonies and celebrations at this year's event our Canadian delegation will visit the new Beit Mark residence building in the North Campus, made possible by donations from across Canada.

BGU will be honouring Dr. Chelsea Clinton at the Board of Governors for her efforts to promote global public health.


Montreal:

The Montreal Main Event is fast approaching. This year, we are raising funds for Beit Mark in memory of Mark Mendelson. Beit Mark is a student residence located in the area of BGU's North Campus.

The event will also feature a conversation with i24 journalist Mike Wagenheim.
